Teaching children baking and cooking is such a useful life skill and a big step towards developing their future independence.
Children being involved in the handling of food can also be wonderful for encouraging them to be more adventurous when it comes to trying new foods. Sensory experiences are wonderful for brain development and baking and cooking encourages all their senses, seeing, hearing, smelling, touching and most fabulously tasting !
Motor skills for example stirring, whisking, peeling, beating, kneading provide the opportunity to develop physical skills – both fine (fingers, hands and co-ordination) and gross (arm and body) motor skills.
Baking and cooking introduces mathematical concepts to kids especially with abstract concepts such as those related to measurements, number and sequencing.
Children feel a real sense of achievement when they have prepared and made food and baked for themselves, it is wonderful for their self-esteem.
